Read to Succeed at Schofield!

Schofield Title I Specialist Joe Chasney teaches his second grade A.M. intervention group
Schofield knows that reading is the key to success!  That is why they have implemented a school-wide plan to ensure every student shows progress.  Every morning upon arrival, the first and second graders go to an assigned room for extra reading instruction.  For thirty minutes, students receive additional instruction based on their specific reading need.  Many students work in small groups where they work with an expert teacher.  All Schofield staff is involved with this endeavor including the Title I teachers, tutors, resource room teachers, psychologist, special area teachers and general classroom teachers.  These same people are involved with extra reading for the third, fourth and fifth graders that takes place at the end of each day.  Everybody at Schofield knows that only way to be a better reader is to spend more time READING!!

Jumping Team Teaches the Ropes to Schofield Students

During the month of March Schofield students participated in the event Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart promotes community service by raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs while teaching physical fitness. Schofield was very fortunate to have fourth, fifth and sixth graders from Beck Elementary School in Utica put on a jump show for us to kick off our event. During our event Schofield students practiced some of the jumps they learned from the show as well as single and partner jumps. At the end of the event third, fourth and fifth grade classes made up their own jump routines! Jump Rope for Heart taught Schofield students that “It takes heart to be a hero!”

Giving Back to Operation: Kid Equip!

Schofield teachers Carmela Rudd and Stacey Dixon unload boxes at the warehouse.

Operation: Kid Equip has been very generous to Schofield staff and students.  Our teachers have been able to visit the warehouse every month to get extra supplies for our students.  We have also been awarded a $10,000 grant of books for our students.  To show our appreciation for the support received from Operation: Kid Equip, Mrs. Rudd, Ms. Dixon and Mrs. Burtch spent a Saturday helping them out.  Look how strong our teachers are!  What a communityJ

Schofield Students Bounce High and Shine!

Schofield Elementary continues to implement our Positive Behavior Support System, where we reward our students for demonstrating appropriate behaviors inside and outside the classroom. Schofield students were able to participate in jumping and playing in a moon bounce as the December 2010 monthly reward event. The students chosen for the monthly events are the three super stars for each classroom (the three students to earn the most starbursts that month) and the shooting star (a student the teacher feels went above and beyond but didn’t earn the most starbursts that month). We continue to encourage and remind our students to continue using their steps (bug and a wish, move away, tell an adult), to make good choices and be safe, responsible and respectful. As January proceeds our Schofield Stars are working towards earning a chance to go roller skating! Go Schofield Stars!!!

Schofield's 5th Grade Goes to Camp!

Schofield Students Paddle around on Pleasant Lake at Camp Howell
Fifth Graders from Schofield went to Camp Howell in May for three action packed, fun filled, educational days that they will hold in their hearts and minds forever.  A year long in-house fund raising effort helped fund a large majority of the trip.  Among other amazing events, students ruled the skies on the high ropes, mastered the trails while orienteering, and conquered the high seas (actually it was a calm lake) canoeing!  Want to know more?  Spend a minute with a Schofield fifth grader; they can't stop talking about it!
