On May 7, 2025, the centennial anniversary of planetariums, Fitzgerald Public Schools dedicated their planetarium to Fitzgerald teacher and administrator, Dr. James D. Edoff.
Dr. Edoff is a dedicated educator that served the Fitzgerald Public School District for 35 years. Jim was hired (1969) a year before Chatterton Middle School opened. He taught science, math and developed the curriculum for the planetarium that was officially opened for instruction and use in November of 1970 under his leadership. The planetarium has been a staple within the Fitzgerald community for many years. With the support of our voters, a bond was passed in 2019 to help upgrade the planetarium interior and provide a new projector. Jim played a huge role in this renovation as well. Jim was the Fitzgerald Public Schools Superintendent from 1992-2004 when he retired.
We are grateful to have the opportunity to have a planetarium at Fitzgerald Public Schools and honored to have it now named the Dr. James D. Edoff Planetarium. The dedication was a beautiful ceremony with many distinguished speakers including current Interim Superintendent, Laurie Fournier, Mayor Lori Stone, Mike Malone from Partners in Architecture and Dr. Edoff's children. The event was a wonderful reunion for former students, colleagues and community members and all left with a deeper appreciation for for Dr. Edoff and the vivid history of the Fitzgerald Planetarium.
